ABOUT THE MOUNT OLYMPUS TRIP

Trig About

Come with us to the 'Mountain of the Gods'. This Greek Adventure holiday is an ideal 7 day escape that will leave your mind well and truly blown.

The main feature of the trip is climbing Mount Olympus, the tallest peak in Greece. In fact, Mount Olympus has 52 peaks, so we will be aiming for the highest point known as Mytikas which stands at 2,918m. The route is mostly made up of hiking, but a tougher scrambling section (roped up) is tackled in order to get to the summit. We spend 3 days hiking on, up to and, off Mount Olympus, as this provides us with the opportunity to take in the area, and also flexibility in our itinerary.

Once the hike is complete, the next day we will embark on a fun Canyoning excursion, so the ideal chance to play in cooling waters surrounding the mountains.

Finally, the trip takes a more relaxing twist as we head for the coastal down of Thessaloniki where you can explore the ancient town or chill on the golden beaches.

MOUNT OLYMPUS ITINERARY

Trig Itin

Day 1 - Get yourself to Thessaloniki Airport (Greece), and then we'll transfer into the hills and stay in Litochoro.

Day 2 - After a lazy morning, we will then transfer to the start of the hike. We will hike for about 4 hours to Refuge A where we will spend the night. The mountain refuges are dormitory style  (6km hiking, with 1000m ascent)

Day 3 - This is the main day of hiking as we head for the summit of Mytikas (2918m). We will leave the refuge about 8am, making our way higher and higher. The final hour involves rugged scrambling, during which you'll be roped up to a Mountain Guide for safety. After the summit celebrations with the Gods, we descend to the Muses Plateau, before continuing to the Petrostrouga Refuge. (8 Hours, 1000m ascent, 1000m descent).

Day 4 - Our final day in the mountains is mostly spent descending. It's just a nice short hike of 3 hours to Gortsia. Once off the hills, we transfer back to Litochoro. (900m descent)

Please note, as with any of our treks, the hiking itinerary is subject to change due to external factors (e.g Weather)

Day 5 - After breakfast we are collected and taken on a fun, entry level  Canyoning experience. Expect to enjoy the chance to swim in pools, jump off ledges and scramble through an awesome Canyon. This experience lasts 5-6 hours, and is completely optional.

Day 6 - After breakfast we transfer 2 hours to Meteora where we will spend the day rock climbing. Much like the Canyoning, there is something for everyone - so whether you just want to have a go, or if you're an established climber, you'll be sure to have fun. We will overnight in Kastraki village, nestled amongst the cliffs you'll have been climbing on.

Day 7 - In the morning we transfer back to Thessaloniki, and by midday you will have time to explore at your leisure.  You may wish to take it easy on the beach, and replenish some calories in the local restaurants, or maybe you'll take a bus or boat tour.

Day 8 - It's sadly time to leave this amazing country. We'll transfer back to the airport and make our departure, or you can extend your holiday.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Trig FAQ

What about Altitude Sickness?

Having concerns about AMS is very natural, however on this trip AMS is incredibly unlikely due to our highlest elevation.

How fit do I really need to be and what skills do I require?

The fitter you are the more you will enjoy it, and the more chance you'll have of getting to the top, however unlike some of our longer expeditions you just need to have reasonable hiking fitness. If you can easily complete a 6-7 hour hike in the Lake District without being totally destroyed by it you'll be fit enough for this trek. As mentioned in the itinerary, there is a high degree of exposure and a requirement to be sure footed on rocky terrain. You're made safe by being attached to the guides with a rope however.

You'll find some advice, as well as a free downloadable 12 week training plan on our Fitness Training pageMatt is a qualified Personal Trainer so if you want some formal training just get in touch with us via LMG Personal Training

What Technical Kit do I require?

All technical kit is provided. If you have your own harness and helmet you're welcome to bring them.

What about the Food and Accommodation?

The food in the mountain huts tends to be soups, salads, pastas and rice dishes. There is also the chance to buy hot and cold drinks, including beers! Our time in the huts is breakfast only, so you will need to budget about 20-30 euro per hiking day for meals (depending on appetite!). We always recommend bringing a few tasty snacks from home to  help fuel you too.  Likewise, our time the villages and town is also Breakfast only, so please budget for lunch and dinner. Food prices are very similar to that found in the UK.

Our accommodation in the cities will be mid-range hotel accommodation. In the mountains it is mountain huts, which are best pictured as hostels in the mountains! It is likely we will be staying in a dormitory style room which sleeps up to 12 people. The huts are always clean and a great experience.

Do I require Travel Insurance?

Most certainly. Travelling, let alone adventure travel, can throw up all sorts of incidents or circumstances that need to be covered by insurance otherwise you could face a very hefty bill. As a minimum your insurance must cover the dates of the trip, the altitude you are trekking to and any additional activities. Our recommendation for travel insurance is Campbell Irvine

Do your trips have a minimum required number of participants to run?

Our scheduled trips do. Our Mount Olympus trip requires 6 people to ensure it is guaranteed to run. We will let you know when it is guaranteed to run and from this point you can book flights.

Do you organise bespoke trips?

Of course, just get in touch with your group size and we'll offer you a quote. This trip can be run between July and September.

Why should I trek with LMG Treks & Expeditions?

For over a decade we've provided fun, educational and safe adventures in the UK through Lakeland Mountain Guides. We've taken our experience and academic education and created a company that has the sole aim of providing amazing, personal adventures abroad. Yes, we're just a small company, but this has two big benefits for you. Firstly, we really appreciate each and every booking we get, and you are not one in a few thousand. Secondly. we're able to, and want to, put the time into helping you get mentally and physically prepared for your adventure.

We pride ourselves on being compliant to UK Package travel regulation laws, diligent with safety, and environmentally sensitive. What's more is we create our trips with the customer experience, safety and chances of success at the very fore of our minds. We will often add in extra days for acclimatisation or contingency to achieve these three major factors, even if it makes our trips a bit more expensive.

How do we justify the price of our trips?

There's no doubt about it, if you went online you'd likely find a cheaper alternative, but you can't be certain you're buying a like for like product. We get it, these trips aren't cheap, but there are numerous reasons why the price amounts to what it does. Please click here to read deeper into the reasons why

Are you environmentally responsible?

As a company, although small, we will operate responsibly, giving back where we can. One of our best partnerships is that with Trees4Travel. We will plant 2 trees on the behalf of every booking we get, and we will plant enough trees to offset the travel of our trek manager too. Click here to see our Responsible Tourism Policy

We discourage the use of single use plastics on expedition where possible, and are continually thinking of ways to become even kinder to the planet we operate in.
